Man Being Tested For Ebola At NYC Hospital
Aug 4, 2014

With the large West African communities on the East Coast, the disease was likely to show up sooner or later:

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) A patient at Mount Sinai Hospital was under treatment Monday afternoon, after being tested after traveling to a country where the Ebola virus is present, the hospital said in a statement.

The man arrived at the East Harlem medical centers emergency room early Monday morning with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms. The man told doctors he had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola has been reported, the hospital said.

The man has been placed in strict isolation and is undergoing various tests to determine the cause of the symptoms, the hospital said.

All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff, the hospital said in a statement. We will continue to work closely with federal, state and city health officials to address and monitor this case, keep the community informed and provide the best quality care to all of our patients.

Limbaugh: Liberals 'Undermined' Reagan With AIDS, Just Like They Will 'Politicize' Ebola
Aug 4, 2014

Radio host Rush Limbaugh warned his listeners on Monday that liberals would make Ebola into a political issue and use it like they had used AIDS to "undermine" President Ronald Reagan.

In an audio clip flagged by Media Matters, the conservative talker explained that he had received some complaints from listeners who said that he should not be spending time talking about the Ebola outbreak in Africa.

"You know, it never ceases to amaze me," he opined. "Twenty-six years and there are people who still think I miss things. If you really want to understand this program -- if you really do -- you're going to have to accept something, that pretty much everything I talk about, I'm talking about because it is political."

"Have you ever heard of AIDS?

James Brady Dead At 73
Aug 4, 2014

He was a man who turned his own personal tragedy into a campaign to stop gun violence:

Former White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was famously shot during the attempt on then-President Ronald Reagan's life in 1981, has died. He was 73.

"Jim touched the lives of so many and has been a wonderful husband, father, friend and role model," his family said in a statement. "We are enormously proud of Jim's remarkable accomplishments - before he was shot on the fateful day in 1981 while serving at the side of President Ronald Reagan and in the days, months and years that followed. Jim Brady's zest for life was apparent to all who knew him, and despite his injuries and the pain he endured every day, he used his humor, wit and charm to bring smiles to others and make the world a better place."

Brady's serious wound meant that he was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life.

Joe Scarborough Welcomes Racist Pat Buchanan Back To MSNBC
Aug 4, 2014

As one of my cohorts here at C&L mentioned to me today, it seems rehabilitating Nazis gets you kicked off of MSNBC... and rehabilitating Nixon gets you back on. I guess the producers at Morning Joe decided their ratings weren't low enough already and they welcomed their favorite race baiting crazy uncle, Pat Buchanan back onto the air with loving arms, even though he was supposedly fired back in 2012.

Joe Scarborough invites Pat Buchanan back to MSNBC after 2012 firing over racist book:

Conservative author Pat Buchanan was fired by MSNBC in 2012 over a book that many liberals considered to be racist, but he returned to the network on Monday at the invitation of host Joe Scarborough.

C&L's Late Nite Music Club With Klaus Nomi
Aug 4, 2014

Nomi was probably best known for his strange appearance and his countertenor range. Essentially, that puts him on par with female contraltos/mezzo-sopranos, which, for most male singers, is pretty unheard of. With this rare ability, Nomi was able to bridge contemporary genres like new wave with baroque opera, which made for some pretty interesting musical experimentation.

Which singers do you think have distinct voices?

Steve King And Rand Paul Confronted By 2 DREAMers In Iowa
Aug 5, 2014

Good times at the old Iowa fundraiser with Steve King and Rand Paul Monday. There they were, eating their burgers, beckoning to all those good Iowa supporters to come on in when suddenly Erika Andiola and Cesar Vargas were standing before him.

Erika introduced herself to Rep. King as a DREAMER. Hilarity ensued. Watch Rand Paul shovel that burger in his mouth before running as fast as his little legs could carry him to anywhere other than there.

House Intelligence Committee's Benghazi Report Concludes No Wrongdoing By Obama Administration
Aug 5, 2014

As Media Matters reported, this should change the media's approach to Rep. Trey Gowdy's select committee on Benghazi and the Republicans wasting even more of our tax dollars on their Benghazi witch hunt, but we know that's never going to happen.

Here's the latest from Steve Benen: Yet another setback for Benghazi conspiracy theorists:

The House Intelligence Committee is among the many congressional panels to investigate the deadly attack on the U.S. outpost in Benghazi in 2012, and its findings are reportedly complete. The committees report is not yet available, but Rep.

Israel 'Spied' On Kerry During Failed Peace Talks Last Year
Aug 5, 2014

Via Al Jazeera America: Israel 'spied' on Kerry during peace talks, Der Spiegel reports:

Israeli intelligence spied on United States Secretary of State John Kerry during the latest failed round of Middle East peace talks, the German newspaper Der Spiegel reported Sunday, threatening to worsen already tense relations between the two countries.

During the peak stage of peace talks last year, Kerry spoke regularly with high-ranking negotiating partners, Spiegel said. Some of these calls were not made on encrypted equipment, but instead on normal telephones, with the conversations transmitted by satellite. Israeli intelligence agencies intercepted some of those calls.

Israels government then used information obtained from the calls during peace negotiations, Der Spiegel said, relying on several anonymous intelligence sources for its investigation.

6-Year-Old Autistic Child Safe After Driving ATV Onto Bronx River Parkway
Aug 5, 2014

I have friends and relatives with autistic kids, and if you didn't see it yourself, you wouldn't believe how fast they can cut and run. These parents must be so relieved -- and so thankful for the "guardian angels" who surrounded this 6-year-old and kept him safe:

MOUNT VERNON An autistic 6-year-old boy drove a miniature battery-powered ATV onto the Bronx River Parkway and was pulled over by good Samaritans on Sunday night, authorities said.

The trip started off in a city park around 7 p.m. when family members lost track of the boy, who rode off in the toy vehicle.

"They realized pretty quickly he was gone but couldn't lay eyes on him," Kieran O'Leary, spokesman for the Westchester County police, said of the Mount Vernon family.
