Petition to Repeal Houston's LGBT Non-Discrimination Ordinance Fails
Aug 4, 2014

A petition to repeal Houston's Equal Rights Ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodations has failed to gather the necessary signatures to appear on November's ballot.

The ordinance was signed into law back in May by Mayor Annise Parker.

Lone Star Q reports:

The petition needed at least 17,269 valid signatures from registered Houston voters to put a repeal of the ordinance before voters in November.

Opponents of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) claimed to have at least 30,000 valid signatures whenthey submitted the petition last month. However, a group supporting the ordinance that independently reviewed the signatures determined that it had a maximum of 16,500 valid signatures.

Opponents of the ordinance have vowed to take the city to court if officials determined their petition didnt have enough valid signatures.

NOM's Brian Brown Defends 'Traditional Marriage' With A Dining Room Set
Aug 4, 2014

Jeremy Hooper the blogger behind Good.As.You. loves it whenever the anti-LGBT National Organization for Marriage uses strained analogies to demonstrate how redefining marriage will destroy the universe.

In his latest blog post, Hooper points out NOM President Bryan Browns tortured comparison of marriage to a dining room set, because marriage should only be between one table and a chair or because a chair isnt a table or because gay marriage is like two tables marrying or something:

Suppose you took a table and a chair and together referred to them both as chairs. In that instance, the two things really would be differentand by calling them the same thing, you would have made the term "chair" meaningless.

Australian Government To Hold Conscience Vote On Same-Sex Marriage
Aug 5, 2014

Australia is likely to allow a conscience vote on same-sex marriage later this year, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Liberal Democratic Party Senator David Leyonhjelm announced in July that he intended to introduce a draft bill to legalize same-sex marriage, which is likely to be put before the House of Representatives this month or next.

This would be the first time Australian MPs have a conscience vote on the issue after Labor made the decision in 2011 to support same-sex marriage.

Fulfilling a pre-election promise by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, the Liberal Party is likely to advocate for a conscience vote during the next session of parliament.

Last Sunday, the New South Wales Labor conference voted to support same-sex marriage but rejected a proposal by 352 votes to 284 to bind its federal MPs to vote in favor.

However, Leyonhjelm has said that he is not making any assumptions regarding the outcome of a conscience vote.

This time the Third Circuit court of appeals denied Santai-Gaffney's request for an "en banc" hearing to gain standing in the case. An "en banc" hearing would up the amount of third circuit judges considering her case from three to fourteen.

LGBTQ Nation reports:

On July 3, a three judge panel of the Third Circuit rejected Santai-Gaffneys bid to gain standing in the case, affirming the District Courts ruling that if the highest elected official in the commonwealth chooses to abide by our decision, it defies credulity that we would permit a single citizen to stand in for him to perfect an appeal.
